In a shocking turn of events, notices were issued to 11 MLAs from the state of Manipur, consisting of members of the BJP, for skipping an all-important meeting called by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. The move was aimed at resolving the ethnic violence between the Meiteis and the Kuki communities besides other grievances towards the governance of the state.
The absentee MLAs are doing so amidst high tensions since 19 BJP legislators wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently, terming for CM Singh’s removal. His Letter blames failures of the leadership in restoring peace and normalcy and wanted refreshing leadership to promote dialogue and reconciliation. They also said that without active political steps, the security forces alone would not bring the crisis to an end.
The notices to absent MLAs have thrown internal fissures within the state’s ruling party into stark relief. Political analysts believe this marks a growing mounting dissatisfaction with the CM’s handling of the affair. As unrest continues in the state, the leadership crisis poses challenges to governance and BJP’s credibility in the region.
This further throws light upon the compulsion to settle the political and ethnic turmoil in Manipur, where thousands have been displaced and the administration machinery strained. All eyes are now on the central leadership of the BJP to act and address the rising crisis.
