Rawalpindi, Pakistan – New Zealand advanced to the semifinals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 after a dominating five-wicket win over Bangladesh. The victory has also guaranteed India’s entry into the knockouts, and host Pakistan and Bangladesh are out of the tournament.
Bangladesh Find It Tough to Post Ffighting Total
Choosing to bat first, Bangladesh posted 236/9 in their 50 overs. Their captain Najmul Hossain Shanto led the way with a steady 77, while Jaker Ali chipped in with a useful 45. But their innings was overshadowed by questionable shot selection and defensive play, and saw a whopping 178 dot balls.
New Zealand’s bowlers took advantage of these difficulties effectively, and Michael Bracewell delivered a match-winning spell of 4/26—the highest figures by a New Zealand spinner in the Champions Trophy till date. His middle-order breakthroughs nipped Bangladesh’s run and kept their total in hand.
Rachin Ravindra’s Masterclass Leads New Zealand Home
Pursuing 237, New Zealand faltered early, losing two early wickets. But young batting sensation Rachin Ravindra held the innings together with a breathtaking 112-run innings—his fourth ODI century. Tom Latham offered good support with a calm 55, and together they facilitated an easy chase, reaching the target in 46.1 overs.
What’s Next?
With two victories apiece in Group A, India and New Zealand have secured their semifinal berths. The two teams will now clash in Dubai to decide the group leader. Bangladesh and Pakistan are eliminated from the tournament.
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner appreciated Bracewell’s work, highlighting how his well-maintained variations on a flat surface contributed significantly to limiting Bangladesh’s score.
As the Champions Trophy 2025 enters its final phases, the battle for the coveted title intensifies, with the remaining teams fighting for ultimate triumph.
