Congress president Rahul Gandhi has assured railway porters from across the country that he would raise their problems with the centre government. While interacting with porters at Anand Vihar Railway Station in Delhi, Gandhi listened to their grievances and promised to raise their rights and welfare.
The porters identified a number of grievances, including low wages, lack of job security, and inadequate social benefits. The majority of them complained about the lack of formal employment status, which excludes them from government welfare programs. Issues of working conditions and better facilities at railway stations were also raised.
Gandhi, in his reply, accepted the grievances of the porters and promised to bring their matters to the notice of the government. He emphasized the need to acknowledge their role in the railway system and protect their rights. “You are the backbone of our railway system, and it is my duty to take your voice to the authorities,” he declared during his interaction.
This outreach is part of Rahul Gandhi’s broader initiative to connect with different sections of society and understand grassroots-level challenges. His engagement with workers, farmers, and labor groups has been a consistent feature of his political approach.
Political analysts take this as a strategic move on the part of the Congress party leader to increase his party’s support base before upcoming elections. His efforts in bringing up labor rights and working-class welfare find precedence in the party’s past emphasis on economic equality and social justice.
As the issue gains political traction, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to these demands. The railway porters, meanwhile, hope that Gandhi’s intervention will lead to tangible improvements in their working conditions and financial security.
