PM Modi Arrives in Mauritius on Two-Day State Visit, Received Ceremonial Welcome

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Mauritius on March 11, 2025, on a two-day state visit and received a ceremonial welcome by Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam at Port Louis airport. The visit symbolizes the robust historical connect of diplomacy, culture, and economy between India and Mauritius.

The guest of honor at Mauritius’s 57th National Day function on March 12 will be PM Modi. An Indian defense team, an Indian Navy warship, and the Indian Air Force’s skydiving unit Akash Ganga will attend the event, highlighting the robust defense collaboration between the two nations.

While in that country, Modi will engage in bilateral talks with Prime Minister Ramgoolam and Mauritian President Dharam Gokhool. Trade, capacity building, security cooperation, and measures to prevent cross-border financial crimes will be discussed. While visiting, PM Modi will also lay foundation for key projects being supported by India, including a Civil Service College and an area health center, as a reiteration of India’s commitment to supporting Mauritius’s development.

India has traditionally been a strong defender of Mauritius’s sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago, an issue of strategic concern regarding the U.S.-British military base on Diego Garcia. The trip is expected to improve India’s geopolitical influence in the Indian Ocean region, as a response to China’s growing presence.

This marks PM Modi’s second visit to Mauritius as Prime Minister, following his 2015 trip. In a statement before departing, he expressed optimism, stating that the visit would “mark a new and bright chapter in India-Mauritius relations.”

The visit is expected to bolster diplomatic and economic ties, reinforcing India’s role as a key partner in Mauritius’s progress and regional stability.
