The first suspected death due to a rare but serious neurological disorder called Guillain-Barré Syndrome has now been reported in Maharashtra. This has become a cause of concern among the health authorities and common people as Pune itself has recorded over 100 confirmed cases so far.
GBS is an autoimmune disease, where the immune system starts to react against its peripheral nervous system parts. Patients may experience flu-like symptoms; muscle weakness, tingling, and some cases result in paralysis. The reason why these cases increased is still unknown; however, researchers hypothesize a connection to possible viral infection or environmental factors.
Residents have been requested by the state health department to stay alert and seek medical care if early symptoms such as numbness, weakness, or shortness of breath are experienced. Hospitals in Pune and other nearby areas are geared up to increase facilities as the number of cases continues to increase, and proper treatment can be given.
Health experts are closely monitoring the situation and are advising the public to take the necessary precautionary measures and get regular health checkup services to avoid any risks.
