The Election Commission of India on Wednesday sought replies from the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress over allegations that both parties violated the Model Code of Conduct during campaigning for this election.
Bharatiya Janata Party claimed that the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been uttering statements that could incite the youth, charging that these violate the principles of election. The Congress said Prime Minister Narendra Modi used “false, malicious, and slanderous” comments in speeches, ultimately undermining ethical campaigning practices.
It presents the role of the Election Commission as safeguarding fair play in elections. The parties will then respond with their version of facts. The EC will, subsequently, observe and act, should it deem fit.
As the election campaign gains momentum, these decisions poise the continuing battle of narratives of the two major political parties. The integrity of the electoral process would depend on the choices made by the EC on these matters.
