Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter Dies at 100

Dec 29, 2024 – Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, has died peacefully at home surrounded by family in Plains, Ga. He was 100 years old. The life: long, a career in public service, humanitarian work, peacemaking.

Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, Carter graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946 and then served in the Navy. After managing his family’s peanut farming business, he entered politics in the 1960s as a state senator and later as governor before winning election to the presidency in 1976.

He completed several important works in his term of presidency (1977–1981). The main successes for Carter’s term include the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, ratification of the Panama Canal Treaties, and the establishment of the Departments of Energy and Education. Severe crises the Carter administration encountered included the Iran hostage crisis and the country’s economic issues.

After leaving the office, Carter’s post-presidency has been known for the most unprecedented humanitarian efforts. In 1982, he founded The Carter Center that advocated for democracy, human rights, and global health. These efforts were rewarded with a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

This month, Carter has been outlived by his wife, Rosalynn, and has lived with four children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. His state funeral is scheduled on January 9, 2025, with a National Day of Mourning declared by President Joe Biden.
