A high-powered defense committee has outlined key focus areas for the modernization of the Indian Air Force (IAF), aiming to enhance its operational capabilities and technological edge. The committee, comprising top defense officials and strategic experts, has emphasized advancements in indigenous aircraft development, next-generation fighter jets, unmanned aerial systems, and enhanced air defense systems.
One of the primary recommendations is the acceleration of the indigenous fighter jet program, including the development of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) and the procurement of more Tejas Mk-2 jets. The committee also stressed the importance of upgrading existing aircraft with state-of-the-art avionics and weapon systems to maintain air superiority.
The integration of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) has also been highlighted as a critical area for modernisation. The IAF is set to expand its fleet of combat drones and surveillance UAVs to enhance reconnaissance and strike capabilities. Additionally, the focus on network-centric warfare, artificial intelligence-driven operations, and electronic warfare systems is expected to strengthen India’s aerial combat readiness.
In the realm of air defence, the committee has prioritized the acquisition of advanced surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems and the deployment of space-based surveillance assets. Strengthening India’s aerial early warning and control (AEW&C) systems is also a major focus to counter emerging threats effectively.
With increasing geopolitical tensions and evolving security challenges, the committee’s recommendations align with India’s vision of self-reliance in defence and strategic preparedness. The government is expected to expedite decision-making on key procurement and development projects to ensure that the IAF remains at the forefront of aerial warfare capabilities.
