Maha Kumbh: Thousands of Devotees Endure Bitter Cold to Take a Holy Dip in Sangam

Thousands of devotees attended the sacred Sangam, a confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati, on the second day of the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj for a sacred bath. Biting cold was unable to deter thousands of pilgrims from the sacred Sangam where they marked their faith and devotion in this sacred and auspicious time.

A Test of Faith
The temperatures have been low, near-freezing levels, and the devotees, including elderly people and small children, are seen entering the icy waters with chants of “Har Har Gange.” Millions come to the Kumbh Mela every year because of the belief in the spiritual cleansing of sins and the promise of salvation.

Festive Atmosphere

Activity galore was evident at the ghats with the priests performing the rituals and the devotees carrying out prayers while being watched upon by security forces. The very air was replete with unity and spirituality because of the pungent fragrance of incense and the continuous sound of the conches.

Mass Arrangements

The authorities have made all necessary arrangements to make the visit safe and convenient for the visitors. Facilities include temporary shelters, medical aid, and increased security. More than 5,000 personnel, comprising police and disaster response teams, have been put in place to manage the crowd and maintain order. Maha Kumbh Mela remains an emblem of India’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage, drawing pilgrims and tourists from around the world.
