Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh apologized to the people of the state as ethnic violence that has hit Manipur since May 2023 continues. While making a choked statement, Singh said, “I feel regret. I apologize to the people of Manipur.”
The violence, majorly between Meitei and Kuki, has so far killed over 250 and left thousands displaced. Singh said he would remember that deep pain this turmoil inflicted in his lifetime. His commitment remained towards rebuilding that trust and harmony among communities.
Hopes for Peace
He stated that violence has been significantly less during the past several months, and he expects that normalcy would return to the state by 2025. “After seeing the progress toward peace during the last three or four months, I hope normalcy will be restored in the state by 2025,” he said.
Chief Minister appeals all the communities to “forget the past mistakes and begin a new life.” The chief minister emphasized the need for dialogue in a collective movement in which people would work together to rebuild Manipur’s social fabric.
Government Action Plan
The government has taken several steps to handle the ongoing crisis, including:
- Sending of more security forces to restore order.
- Intensive settlement campaign for dislodged families.
- Initiatives to curb undocumented immigration.
Singh reiterated his commitment to the redressal of the grievances of the people through non-violent means and building a safe future for all citizens of Manipur.
