The ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill, which envisions simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, state legislatures and local councils, has been deferred. The legislation, which intends to have a unified schedule for elections so that the country is not burdened with frequent polling, has evoked hot debate among political parties as well as experts.
Introducing the Bill will take more time because it will be further discussed and consulted over its feasibility and probable effect on India’s democratic framework. While proponents of the initiative claim that it can save resources and make governance smoother, critics claim that it undermines federalism, creates logistical headaches, and requires constitutional amendments.
