Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a seven-pillar strategy to expand India’s engagement with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the coalition of 15 nations in the Caribbean region. This is part of India’s larger strategy to deepen its relations with other developing countries through South-South cooperation.
In his speech, PM Modi cited the need to take up collective challenges for the world and to continue together on the path to mutual growth. The agreed framework rests upon:
- Climate Action: Joint initiatives in climate resilience and renewable energy.
- Healthcare: Expanding access to affordable medicines and health care solutions for the people of CARICOM.
- Infrastructure Development: Support initiatives that promote sustainable infrastructure.
- Trade and Investment: to expand bilateral trade and pursue new market opportunities.
- Technology and Innovation: to share expertise in digital technologies and innovation.
- Education and Skill Development: to provide scholarships as well as vocational trainings for CARICOM youth.
- Cultural and People-to-People Ties: to promote tourism and cultural exchanges to strengthen bonds.
This strategic roadmap reflects the heightened role India plays in global development and its commitment toward developing resilience and equity-based partnerships. The CARICOM grouping remains optimistic with this proposal, in that it can advance regional growth and cooperation.
This initiative follows active engagement by India with other regional organizations, reinforcement in a position of being the trusted global partner.
