Supreme Court Intervened in Controversy Over Religious Site Surveys The Supreme Court of India has been petitioned to intervene over lower court orders for conducting mosque and dargah surveys, including the Shahi Eidgah Mosque at Mathura. Such a survey probing historical claims on Hindu religious symbols or structures has raised a spate of controversy over their communal sensitivity.
Recently, the Supreme Court has extended its stay on a lower court’s directive for a survey of the Shahi Eidgah Mosque that is adjacent to the Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple. The apex court emphasized the need for the detailed judicial scrutiny, while noting the potentially far-reaching implications of such actions.
One among such cases falling under a bigger pattern of disputes in connection with religious sites regarding old history and claims regarding prior destruction or modification that again found support under some other regnum. Such cases had contentious issues, and thereby gave rise to a concern towards the reconciliation of protecting the heritage site with peace to the community.
This case is very sensitive, and it is of utmost importance that the Supreme Court intervene so that such matters can be dealt with fairly and impartially. The issue, as it unfolds, becomes a call for careful legal approach respecting India’s multicultural identity.
